Purveyors of all this CG-cinema, Pixar are near the forefront of mainstream graphical prowess.
As their newest film, Wall-E prepares for release, production designer for the film, Ralph Eggleston took time to talk to Next Generation about next-gen graphics.
When asked how big the gap is between Pixar films and video game graphics, Eggleston did not mince words.
“A vast, vast difference. If the player is involved in the narrative they can render it only so fast, really, though it will get faster. But when you’re in control of a narrative, as we are as film-makers, the level of detail has to be much greater and we have the opportunity to create that because we have full control.”
He went on to speak about how the two mediums are not mutually exclusive, how they will probably never merge and how film is “passive” and games are “active.” I know some film buffs who would take offense to that.
